Right you are. The October run at Winterland before the "break" or "hiatus" or whatever it was til well into 75 (which was a low mileage touring year for sure).

There is a thread here at LMA it in which we discussed it in great detail if either of you are interested (3-6 months ago? could search and find it if you know how; just search GD forum under "steal your face" or "steal your money" the nasty comment SOMEONE made about it...).

Thanks WT. I might just do that. The shows were hot but I remember being disappointed with the album's sound quality when it was released. I don't think I was the only one. I'll find that thread when I have a bit more time and check it out.
Thanks!

I have long been on record with my stance that this is THE most unfairly treated Dead album. The only thing I can think of as to why, besides a possible bandwagon panning, is the lack of any jams in a year of stellar music for the band. Add that in contrast to the inclusion of a few throwaways like Around X 2. Regardless, I'd like to see anyone find fault if they had made a single album using the following ( granted they're all Jerry songs but I can think of better Bob songs they could have chosen ):

Cold Rain and Snow - there is NO better version imo.
Sugaree
1/2 Step
Stella Blue
Must Have Been the Roses
US Blues ( good little tune in it's prime before it becamse the dreaded overplayed encore.
Casey Jones

Then if you wanted to you could throw in a Jam and a Dew and you'd have one damn fine album.

That's interesting, I'll have to find a copy of SYF and give it another listen. I remember looking for it everywhere when I first started listening to the band but it was way out of print. When I finally got a taped copy, it sounded like shit. Never knew if that was due to the tape or the original. Over the years, yeah, I read all the crappy reviews and just forgot about it.

well yeah, sound quality wise it isn't the best BUT those versions of those tunes are just too damn good to pass up. It kicks the shit out of without a net even if without a net has better sound quality.

That is one I agree with. Never did care for Net. But, you all know me--how can you trust me on anything post 71? I am sooo damn negative.

Hey, D, more seriously--way to go on your baseball and football fortunes my friend! Can it get any better for you?

Of course, our unexpected diamondbacks are hanging tough thus far, but if Cush and SDH don't get off their butts and start working their mojo, I am not sure how far this will go...of course, we can always fall back on the Cardinals...ack, hem, argh...yuck...nevermind.

Gotta love that "Without a Net" Althea though. At least I do, I gotta love it.

Well, there I'll agree...but, that is a song I love anytime, anywhere, any approach. To be honest, the favorite song post 74 for me by the boys period.

This looks like the thread of a past discussion of this if anyone cares: http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=138327

I agree that the playing is phenominal as the band went out with a definite bang prior to the hiatus. But I still say that the sound quality is not the greatest. I grew up on crappy recordings of bootleg shows only to be spoiled much later on with better sounding recordings. So I was used to listening to sub-par recordings and learned to love and appreciate them. But for something to be released from a record company to sounded like that, I thought was a mistake. But I guess they needed the cash.
